Portugal’s remote-work visa route can be relevant to non-EU workers planning to live in Madeira while working for an employer or clients outside Portugal. For a 2027 application, use your competent Portuguese consulate’s current checklist: a future-year title is not confirmation of a future-year income threshold.

As checked on 26 October 2026, the remote-work checklist requires average monthly income over the preceding three months equivalent to four Portuguese minimum monthly wages. The 2026 national minimum is €920, making €3,680 the corresponding 2026 calculation. We have not verified a final 2027 minimum-wage decree and therefore do not present an estimated 2027 amount as law.

Start with your nationality and length of stay

EU, EEA and Swiss citizens use a different framework from non-EU visa applicants. A national remote-work visa is not the starting point for everyone. Before paying for a visa service, identify your citizenship, where you legally reside, how long you want to stay and which Portuguese consular post handles that place of residence. Those details determine the relevant checklist and application process.

Short visits, temporary stays and moves requiring a residence permit are different plans. Do not assume that an ordinary tourist entry automatically settles every question about working remotely. Equally, do not assume that renting an apartment creates an immigration entitlement. Ask the competent authority about your circumstances and keep the answer with your planning documents.

Temporary stay and residence routes

The temporary-stay route is commonly used for a remote-work stay of up to one year. The residence route is the entry path for a longer move and is followed by a separate residence-permit process in Portugal. A visa and a residence card are different documents issued at different stages; one should not be described as the other.

AIMA publishes the requirements for the remote-work residence permit, including a valid passport, the relevant residence visa and evidence of the work relationship outside Portugal. Its current guidance describes an initial two-year permit, renewable for successive three-year periods. This does not guarantee an appointment date or approval in a particular case. Keep travel and accommodation commitments flexible while your application is unresolved.

How to read the income requirement

Income planning: confirmed year versus future year
PeriodWhat can be stated
2026 national wage baseline€920 per month under Decreto-Lei 139/2025
2026 four-times calculation€3,680 average monthly income over the preceding three months
2027 applicationConfirm the applicable wage and checklist when applying; no fixed 2027 amount is asserted here

An income test is not the same thing as a savings balance. The remote-work checklist asks about income earned during a specified period and evidence of the professional relationship. For a freelancer, gather a consistent set of contracts, invoices and bank records rather than presenting one unusually strong month as the whole picture. Ask how the consulate wants foreign-currency amounts documented.

If a threshold changes before you submit, a calculation made months earlier may no longer answer the question. Keep a dated note of the official checklist you used and recheck it before paying fees or attending an appointment. Do not annualise a monthly figure and assume that annual total replaces the stated monthly evidence requirement.

Savings, family members and insurance

Savings, means of subsistence, insurance and family applications can require additional evidence. There is no universal savings-and-family calculation that guarantees approval. The applicable route, household and consular instructions matter. Obtain the current requirements for each accompanying person and budget beyond the minimum documentary test.

Check what insurance must cover, where it must be valid and for which period. A policy useful for a holiday is not automatically the right policy for a residence application. Keep the policy document and certificate available in the format requested. If there is uncertainty about a family member’s eligibility, resolve it with the consulate or a qualified adviser before booking non-refundable travel.

Documents to organise before applying

  • A passport meeting the validity requirements on your current checklist.
  • The completed application, photographs and any required appointment or fee records.
  • Employment or service-contract evidence showing the remote work relationship outside Portugal.
  • Income evidence for the required period and proof of tax residence where requested.
  • Accommodation evidence in the form and for the duration accepted by your consular post.
  • Insurance, criminal-record documents and any translations or legalisation required for your case.
  • Separate supporting documents for accompanying family members, if applicable.

This is an organising list, not a replacement for the official checklist. Follow the wording and document age limits of the post that will decide your application. Names and dates should match across the file. Leave time for certificates, translations and legalisation, and do not pay an intermediary on the assumption that an application can skip a requirement.

The Madeira question

Madeira is part of Portugal, so a move to the island is considered within the Portuguese immigration system. The island also has regional institutions and regional wage arrangements. Rather than making our own ruling on which wage figure your consulate will apply, ask that post to confirm the applicable basis for a Madeira address. A written clarification is more useful than copying an unsupported answer from a travel article.

Proof of accommodation without false promises

Ask the consulate exactly which accommodation documents it accepts for your route and stage of the application. Required duration, contract form and supporting details can differ. A short holiday reservation is not something we promise will satisfy a residence application. Do not manufacture a booking or request a document that misrepresents where you will stay.

We can discuss a real stay at Apartment Funchal, provide the agreed booking information and explain the apartment facilities. We cannot guarantee that a booking document will be accepted as visa evidence or issue a residential lease that has not actually been agreed. Confirm the documentary requirement first, then ask us whether the proposed stay can meet it.

EU citizens and registration

EU, EEA and Swiss citizens planning to remain beyond three months should check the local registration-certificate process with the Câmara Municipal. Portuguese government guidance describes requesting the certificate within thirty days after the first three months. Residence rights and tax obligations are separate questions; a simple visa-free statement does not resolve taxation, social security or employer compliance.

Building a working routine in Funchal

Once the entry and residence questions are clear, choose a place that works for ordinary weekdays. Ask for a recent internet speed test, a desk arrangement suited to calls, kitchen and laundry facilities and the actual route to groceries. A dedicated workspace matters more over a month than it does over a weekend. Compare coworking membership with working from your accommodation rather than assuming either is automatically necessary.

Our apartment offers 500 Mbps fibre, a dedicated home office, two bedrooms and two bathrooms, a private balcony, a shared rooftop pool and a garage. It accommodates four adults and two children. Seven-night blocks and personal quotes for 28 nights or more make it possible to discuss a stay of several weeks or months. Booking remains subject to confirmation and is independent of any immigration decision.

Frequently asked questions

What is the confirmed 2027 income threshold?

No final 2027 amount is asserted in this guide. The 2026 national calculation is four times €920, or €3,680 per month. Recheck the applicable 2027 rule with your consulate.

Does the route apply to Madeira?

Madeira is part of Portugal. Confirm your eligibility and the applicable documentation with the Portuguese consulate responsible for your place of residence.

Do EU citizens need a D8 visa?

EU, EEA and Swiss citizens use a different residence framework. Check local registration requirements for stays longer than three months.

Is a holiday booking guaranteed to meet the accommodation requirement?

No. Ask the competent consulate which documents and duration it accepts. We can only provide accurate documents for a real agreed stay.

Are the family and savings figures universal?

No universal savings or family approval calculation is promised here. Use the current checklist for your route, household and consular post.
